LAGOS, SEPTEMBER, 2014 — Templars Barristers & Solicitors emerged as the best firm in the Banking and Finance category at the 2014 ESQ Nigerian Legal Awards, in a ceremony held at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, on the 18th of September, 2014. The award was handed to Templars on the basis of their financing deal for Eko Atlantic City.

The awards were conferred to recipients under strict scrutiny by a group of judges who used deciding criteria such as: the quantum of the deal, the legal expertise expended in the course of the transaction, client satisfaction, teamwork (employee deployment) and turn-around time.

The ESQ Nigerian Legal Awards was set up to recognize law firms and legal practitioners that have distinguished themselves in their chosen areas of specialization. Commenting on the selection process, the chairman of the 2014 ESQ awards, Mr. Adesegun Akin-Olugbade, noted that the panel had difficulty in arriving at the winners because the entries submitted were competitive. Akin-Olugbade, who spoke through a member of the selection panel, Mr. Dapo Otunla, said

The legal profession has gone way beyond the orthodox definition of law which determines success only in terms of litigation. The legal profession has embraced other aspects of corporate governance and this has carved a niche for the profession. The good quality of the entries made the job of the judges more difficult but it was worth the while.”

Dapo Otunla

The Chief Executive Officer of Legal Blitz Limited (Publisher of ESQ Legal Practice Magazine) Mr. Lere Fashola, said the awards were to recognise the excellent job lawyers and law firms were doing to project and develop the nation’s legal profession.
