On 17 September 2026, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed the implementation of Nigeria’s Digital Free Zones initiative. The initiative is designed to enable Nigerian technology and service companies to raise global capital, build for international markets and scale from Nigeria without moving their businesses or intellectual property abroad.

Itana, licensed by the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) as Nigeria’s first Digital Free Zone, anchors the initiative through the US$500 million Itana Innovation project at Alaro City, Lagos, backed by the Africa Finance Corporation.

In parallel, the Presidential Steering Committee on Digital Free Zones continues its work across regulation, taxation, banking, immigration, arbitration and the digitisation of government processes, with amendments to the NEPZA Act and new subsidiary instruments likely to follow.

This client alert highlights the background to the initiative, its key objectives, and the implications for technology companies, digital businesses and investors as the implementation framework takes shape.
